Spare’s lightweight and high-strength FRP materials present an optimal solution for bridge deck applications. These panels possess a longer life cycle than their timber, concrete, or steel counterparts, which are susceptible to rotting or corrosion, rendering them less cost-effective than FRP alternatives. Additionally, these lightweight panels are facile to install and can be assembled on site.
Notably, the Spanish footbridge, consisting of three spans measuring 41m, 19m, and 41m with a width of 3m respectively, and a total span of 101m, was completed in 2010 exclusively using FRP. The construction employed three types of Spare U-channels and I-beams. The FRP materials underwent rigorous testing and were subsequently transported to the site, where they were promptly assembled and installed, requiring a mere two hours for lifting.
Of particular significance, the bridge remains in use to this day and has not required maintenance.
